POSTURAL RESTORATION

The human body, although an amazing design, is not symmetrical. This means that our neurological, respiratory, circulatory, and muscular systems are not the same on both sides of the body. These systems have different responsibilities, functions, and demands and as a result, our bodies develop and function through asymmetry. The system asymmetry is a good thing and an amazing design as the human body is balanced through the integration of imbalances. Think of the way the brain, the circulatory system, and our internal organs are on one side of the body. This is why typically the right side of your body is more dominant. The problem lies when this is in excess causing discomfort, pain, and dysfunction.

Posture is a reflection of a position of many systems that are regulated, determined, and created through functional movement patterns. These patterns reflect our ability and inability to breathe, rotate, and rest symmetrically with left and right activity of our body. Our pattern muscles have a huge influence on the way we function and move while repositioning, repatterning, and revolving between both sides of the body. When properly positioned, aligned and balanced, the joints and muscles can work in a more effective and efficient manner. Postural restoration works to reposition the body into proper bone and muscle alignment, and then uses exercises to retrain our neuro-muscular system to engage in movements that maintain this position, preventing us from falling back into faulty positions.

Inactivity and poor posture are breeding grounds for cross syndrome, which develops when muscles in one part of the body become overstretched and weak while muscles in the opposing part become overworked, short and tight. We use non-manual, manual techniques, and external equipment to reposition the body towards neutral, improve respiration, and retrain the body's ability to maintain the position by breathing correctly. The diaphragm, naturally asymmetrical becomes overactive on the right side causing compensatory neuromuscular movement patterns. We train left hip flexion/adduction and internal rotation and right hip extension/abduction and external rotation to re-establish proper pelvic position. We treat you with a different understanding and skill set than traditional strength and conditioning and physical therapy. The postural restoration approach covers the whole spectrum from the general population to elite athletes. We take a holistic approach and we get results. Most patients can feel a difference in their bodies very quickly, if not immediately.
"There is no one better than Malcolm in this industry. He knows his stuff and knows how to get you to meet your goals. The best part about him is that he knows how to get you bigger and stronger, but he does it in a healthy way. I personally had a stress fracture in my back last summer that was bothering me for about 8 months. With Malcolm's help I was back playing again within a month of being home from school and working with him. Very grateful to have a guy like this as my trainer."
